چکیده

DURING THE MONTH of June, 1955, while measurements were being made of the depth of penetration of moonlight into the sea off the Kona Coast (S. W. coast) of the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian gtoup, some information was obtained on bioluminescence in deep water in this region and on the effect of moonlight on the vertical distribution of luminescent organisms. Observations of bioluminescence were also made off San Diego, California, during the month of January, 1956. An underwater photometer (Kampa, 1955; Snodgrass et al., 1957 in press) designed for work in the deep sonic-scattering layers was used for these measurements. This was ,equipped with a depth-indicator (Boden et al., 1955) so that a precise knowledge of the depth of the instrument was available at all times. The instrument utilizes a 931-A photomultiplier tube oriented with the sensitive surface facing up. In front of this is a collimating tube at the base of which is a filterholder for interference filters. The collimator ensures that the 5° useful angle of the filters

Measurement of Michaelis Constants for ATP and Mg2+ in Bioluminescence Reaction of Luciferase by a Home-Made Luminometer

Effects of ATP and Mg2+ concentrations on bioluminescence reaction of luciferase (Photinus pyralis) were investigated by home-made luminometer. The Michaelis constants of the enzyme for ATP and Mg2+ obtained from the Lineweaver-Burk graph, were 61.9 mM ±3.3 mM and 251.6mM ± 39.0mM...

Visualization of Leishmania tropica Infection in BALB/c Mice by Bioluminescence Imaging

Background: Leishmania tropica is the cause of more than one form of leishmaniasis and lacks a known reservoir animal. This study compares the potential infectivity of recombinant and wild-type L. tropica in BALB/c mice. Methods: The potential infectivity of recombinant L. tropicaEGFP or L. tropicaEGFP-LUC by two different, the subcutaneous and intradermal, routes was compared using a range of ...

An Adenosine Triphosphate Bioluminescence Method for Evaluating the Microbial Contamination of the Salad-Preparing Tables and Salad-Serving Dishes in Restaurants of Mashhad City, Iran

Introduction: Consumption of vegetable products is increasing commonly in the world because they are recognized as an important source of nutrients, vitamins, and fiber for humans. Salads are among the most widely used foods that are also known as the most contaminated foods in restaurants. This study was conducted to determine the microbial contamination of salad-preparing tables and salad-ser...

Bioluminescence in the ocean: origins of biological, chemical, and ecological diversity.

From bacteria to fish, a remarkable variety of marine life depends on bioluminescence (the chemical generation of light) for finding food, attracting mates, and evading predators. Disparate biochemical systems and diverse phylogenetic distribution patterns of light-emitting organisms highlight the ecological benefits of bioluminescence, with biochemical and genetic analyses providing new insigh...

Directed Improvement of i-Photina Bioluminescence Properties, an Efficient Calcium-Regulated Photoprotein

Photoproteins are excellent reporter systems because they don’t have virtually background signal. Aequorin is the most well-known photoprotein. Three improved engineered photoproteins photina, i-photina and c-photina, were also recently developed and optimized for generation of Ca2+ mobilization assays precisely. The total light emission is greater than aequorin and their reacti...
